85 Broads Board Training Programs

85 Broads is excited to announce two new Board Training programs for 2013, in partnership with the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). The 85 Broads Corporate Board Training Program, partnering with NACD and its private equity members is aimed at seasoned executives ready for a board position with a private equity-backed company, as well as 85 Broads members wanting to establish themselves as board ready. The program will kick-off with an in-person meeting in March, a day of training in April ($300) and one in August (cost to be determined), along with a commitment to place inaugural class participants on a board within 18 months. Graduates of the program will be certified by the NACD.

Our Advisory Board Training Program ($100/10 session for members and $200 for non-members) is tailored to entrepreneurs managing their first boards and executives who may already serve on startup or non-profit boards or would like to do so. This is an online learning series, complemented by in-person sessions in either San Diego or LA, launching in February. If you are interested in either program, please join us for a webinar on Feb. 5th. You may register here.

85 Broads Recap

12/12/12 Event
85 Broads SoCal was proud to co-host the Los Angeles 12/12/12 Women on Boards Luncheon at City Club. As a part of national initiative, luncheons were held across the United States to support 20/20 Women on Boards. The goal of 20/20 Women on Boards is to increase the number of female corporate board members by 20% or greater by the year 2020 (currently around 15%). The luncheon was co-hosted and produced by Unfinished Business, Women Corporate Directors, and Broads Circle, and was attended by over 100 women.

The panel featured three experienced women on large corporate boards (Wendy Webb, Jack in the Box; Edith Perez, Con-Way; Joan Herman, Convergys and Qualicorp SA) who provided insight into the challenges women have in securing such board positions.

At the event, 85 Broads member Delilah Panio announced the new 2013 board-training program for 85 Broads SoCal members (see spotlight event above).

New Member Spotlight

Joy Langford Founding Partner
Joy Langford is dedicated to providing strategic consulting and business development for clients of the Mandeville Group and is incredibly passionate about helping companies become corporate responsible citizens.  The Mandeville Group is a Los Angeles-based minority and women-owned firm that provides public/private partnership consulting to companies that are looking for strategic partnerships with Federal, State, and local municipalities.  Joy graduated from Santa Barbara with a dual degree in Economics and Urban Planning. Joy is also an advisory board member of the SCAQMD (South Coast Air Quality Management District) and involved with the Milken Institute.

Why are you a part of 85 Broads?
I first experienced 85 Broads at an event following a Milken Institute function.  The women at the 85 Broads event were electric, and I fell in love.  I had such a great experience at the event I knew I was in! I come from an all girls’ school education and I have always had a sense of unity with women.  I’m for women and see the overreaching power of a group like 85 Broads.

What would you like to see 85 Broads tackle?
I would like to see more social and networking events, appealing to ALL women in 85 Broads.  I recognize that it is hard thing to accomplish with so many dynamic women pursuing different things, but I would love to see at least once a month an event appealing to all members.

What 85 Broads members are you in a unique position to help?
I think I am in a unique position to help women that are trying to implement groundbreaking work with the companies they serve in the clean energy space. I would encourage anyone to reach out to me and ask any green related questions.  I am an encyclopedia of information and I love connecting people.

What are you planning next?
I plan to continue to grow my company and integrate our services with larger companies.  Most of the companies I have represented have been start-ups and mid-sized companies.  I am very excited because the Mandeville Group just signed a contract with Clearwater to retrofit LAX with interactive media, in an effort to make LAX more technology friendly.  There are endless companies I would like to work with, whether revamping infrastructures or helping companies become responsible corporate citizens.

New Business Spotlight

psbty takes the hassle out of shopping for beauty and grooming products. You work directly with a dedicated expert, who consults, shops and ships the right products to your doorstep. You shop at your convenience via phone or video chat. The service and shipping is always 100% FREE.

The idea came from Caroline Dahllof's needs as a consumer and Mitra Roknabadi’s insight as a retailer. Caroline wanting to have beautiful skin and makeup without having to run to stores, researching and sampling an endless amount of products. Mitra understood how powerful good customer service and personalized shopping experience is to satisfy customers' needs. They started brainstorming and soon after launched psbty in Sept 2012.
The two founders, Mitra and Caroline, met through a mutual friend. They both share a love for beauty and a hate for shopping. They quickly became friends as they bonded over stories about growing up in Northern Europe and living in LA and NYC.
